  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from GlevumGuy. -- A book to treasure with lots and lots of colored maps and photographic images. : I have been collecting books for a very long time and this is one of the better ones I have seen. At least the hardcover version where the print, though not oversize can be easily read, unlike the soft cover version I purchased at first. It seems that even in a book titled an Atlas you may get very few maps but in this one there are hundreds of them in gorgeous color, maps of countries, of battles, migrations, burial sites, forts, it's all here. There are even maps and chapters informing us about the 'celtic' descendants who have migrated throughout the modern world, Patagonia, America, Canada, Mexico, etc. Really I think those people who find fault in this book must be related to authors of other versions, (I bought several of them before I found this), but none of them compare, at the very least in regard to the illustrations. Anyway I have yet to read a book without errors in it and so there are bound to be some in a volume of this size, this all encompassing, though thus far I haven't come across any. If you are a lover of books, buy it. If you wish to learn about the Celts in a very readable format, buy it. If you want reference maps and images of this historical period, hundreds of them, well you know what to do, for all it contains this book really is a bargain. (But again if your eyes are not really sharp do get the hardcover version, in the soft cover the print is about one sixteenth, (.06) of an inch high). • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Patrice -- History with Pictures : The pages in the book are very large, 10 X 13, which allows for large, clear maps. It is a history book with maps and pictures, good as a suppliment to other historical texts, or as an overview of a long range of historical events. Each topic receives a page or two of text along with a map and sometimes some beautiful photos. Celts in many countries are written about, including Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Brittany, as well as some of the places to which they emmegrated. There are also chapters about Celtic culture including Irish Leprechauns and Cornish Pixies. It is an interesting, diverse text with colorful maps, published in 2009. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from J. Cavanagh -- Not Worth A Dime : I bought this book for a few dollars, without opening it, on impulse as I was leaving a prominent bookstore. I judged the book by its cover - what a mistake! At home I found the typeface in this edition to be vanishingly small; I need a magnifying glass for even the briefest reading. Worse, I found the book to be riddled with painful, and painfully obvious, errors of grammar and spelling and fact. For example, the Battle of Culloden was fought on 16 April 1746 near Inverness, yet a map (page 227) which includes the location of the battlefield gives the date as 16 April 1646. The same map includes the location of the Battle of Falkirk, which had been fought on 17 January 1746, but names the site Flakirk. I give this book one star because the system wouldn't accept zero stars. I did like that the book seemed well-organized around short segments, was decently indexed, and came with many colorful maps but overall the evident level of error and misinformation nullifies these virtues. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from R.L. Holly -- Marred by horrific typos and non-editing : As an earlier reviewer noted, this large, handsome book is unfortunately plagued by what I believe is the absolute worst job of copy editing and proofreading I have ever seen from a mainstream book publisher. At first, I wondered if the sloppy grammar and uneven sentence constructions were the result of a poor translation, but I see only English-speaking names connected with this title, including a couple of so-called editors who should hang their heads in shame and have their red pencils snapped in front of their eyes. The production problems with this book go beyond poor writing skills (although that is bad enough); without even trying very hard, I found all sorts of misspelled proper names, terms, place names; inconsistent terminology (even within the same section/page); dates with transposed numbers; and even the maps are littered with similar mistakes, such as items in the key that are not to be found on the map (and vice-versa), misspellings, and graphic elements out of place or missing (e.g., national borders that suddenly stop in mid-map). • 3.0 out of 5 stars from K. Wheaton -- Still worthy--- warts and all : I actually like this book in spite of the obvious typos as others have mentioned. It is a very different look at the spread of Celtic tradition and some of the maps I have not see elsewhere in any incarnation. Its not perfect but if you can get this for a few bucks do not miss the opportunity. I think it is a mistake to discard this as being of poor or little value. Its actually a book I would love to see revised bringing it up to date with new archaeological finds and correcting previous errors. Each map has a 2-4 page written introduction. They are very extensive including such intriguing titles as the Scots in Canada, Irish regiments in WWI , Roman Conquest of Britain, Celtic Scotland, Iberian Celts, Celtic Trade etc. My copy is a paperback edition and the maps are clear and very readable.
